Snow spreads out into the Great Plains Monday
by AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Michael LeSeney
A storm will move out of the Rocky Mountains and into the Great
Plains Monday and then into the western Great Lakes by Tuesday. This
storm will deepen rapidly as it tracks across the Midwest pushing
severe thunderstorms out ahead of it and wrapping snow around behind
it. This storm will produce heavy, wind-whipped snow in the mountains
of northern Utah and Colorado where up to a foot of snow will fall
during the day Monday. As the storm leaves the Rockies it will spread
its wind and snow out into the Great Plains. Rain will change to snow
from west to east across portions of Nebraska and Kansas into the
eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota Monday night. Strong northwest
winds will accompany the snow and gust 40-60 mph. The snowfall in the
Plains will start off light accumulating just 1-3 inches Monday night
with perhaps as much as 6 inches in parts of eastern North Dakota and
western Minnesota. However, this storm will intensify Tuesday with
heavy snow and high winds blowing across Minnesota, Wisconsin and
Upper Michigan. Snow will accumulate 6-12 inches in parts of northern
Wisconsin and western Upper Michigan Tuesday as winds gusts past 50
mph at times. As this storm then tracks across eastern Canada it will
pull cold air across the Great Lakes and spark lake-effect snow
showers on Wednesday from Michigan to Pennsylvania and Upstate New
York.
